Membership Types — Which Morro Bay Lions Category Is Right for You?

Joining the Morro Bay Lions means stepping into a long tradition of local service, friendship, and community leadership. We offer several membership categories so people with different life circumstances can belong, contribute, and grow with us. Below is a clear, friendly guide to each type, who it’s for, what it means, and quick helper text you can use in a form dropdown or tooltip.

Quick tip

Not sure? Choose Active Member — it’s the standard choice for most new applicants. Our Membership Team will review your form and advise if another category fits better.

Active Member (Recommended)

Short description: Full membership with all rights and responsibilities. Most new Lions join as Active Members.

Who it’s for: People who want to participate regularly, vote in club business, be eligible for leadership roles, and pay regular dues.

Rights & responsibilities

  • Vote at club meetings.
  • Hold office and serve on committees.
  • Attend service projects and meetings regularly.
  • Pay club dues (amounts set by the club).

When to pick this: If you plan to regularly volunteer, attend meetings, and play an active role in club life.

Suggested dropdown/helper text (short):
“Full member — vote, lead, and serve. Most new members choose this.”

Affiliate Member

Short description: Stay connected when you can’t fully participate; limited rights.

Who it’s for: People who support our mission but cannot commit to full participation due to work, travel, caregiving, or other constraints.

Rights & responsibilities

  • May have limited voting and office-holding rights (determined by club bylaws).
  • Expected to support projects when available.
  • Dues may apply at a reduced or special rate (club decision).

When to pick this: If you want a formal connection to Morro Bay Lions but need a lighter commitment.

Suggested dropdown/helper text (short):
“For limited participation—stay connected without full duties.”

Associate Member

Short description: For Lions already active in another club who want a local connection here.

Who it’s for: Active Lions whose primary membership (and voting/dues obligations) remain with another club, but who want to participate locally in Morro Bay.

Rights & responsibilities

  • Local participation without duplicating primary membership responsibilities.
  • Voting/dues handled according to LCI rules and club policy.

When to pick this: If you are already a Lion elsewhere (e.g., work or travel between communities) and want to be active here too.

Suggested dropdown/helper text (short):
“Already a Lion? Join locally as an Associate while keeping your primary club.”

Member-at-Large

Short description: Maintain membership when you can’t attend regularly.

Who it’s for: Members away because of relocation, health, or work who want to remain affiliated.

Rights & responsibilities

  • Not normally eligible to vote or hold office (club-specific).
  • Remain listed as a member and can be reactivated when circumstances change.

When to pick this: If you want to remain part of the club but can’t attend or participate right now.

Suggested dropdown/helper text (short):
“For members who can’t participate regularly but want to stay listed as a Lion.”

Life Member

Short description: Recognition for long, faithful service; special status awarded by the club.

Who it’s for: Long-standing Lions who meet LCI criteria (often a combination of years of service and age) and are formally granted Life status.

Rights & responsibilities

  • Honorary in nature; dues handling varies (LCI Life Member programs can provide dues relief).
  • Awarded by the club or LCI according to established guidelines.

When to pick this: You don’t apply directly — this is an honor the club or LCI grants after long-term service.

Suggested dropdown/helper text (short):
“A special recognition for many years of service — awarded by the club.”

Honorary Member

Short description: By-invitation honor for individuals who have significantly supported the club or community.

Who it’s for: Community leaders, volunteers, or supporters honored for their contributions.

Rights & responsibilities

  • Typically do not vote or pay dues.
  • Symbolic membership recognizing exceptional support.

When to pick this: Not an applicant selection — the club extends this invitation.

Suggested dropdown/helper text (short):
“By invitation — honor given to distinguished community supporters.”

How the Club Decides Membership Type

  • The applicant indicates a preferred type on the form.
  • The Membership Committee reviews each application, may interview or invite you to an event, and then recommends action to the Board.
  • Final assignment and approval are by the Morro Bay Lions Board of Directors, in keeping with Lions Clubs International procedures.
