Programs | Vision Screenings & Eyeglasses
The Morro Bay Lions, in collaboration with California Lions Friends in Sight (District 4-C1), conduct periodic vision-check events at local schools and community venues. Licensed volunteers screen children and adults who face financial barriers to vision care. Anyone with vision needs is welcome—no appointment required. When needed, we provide recycled eyeglasses on-site, and refer clients for follow-up care.
In addition to local services, the Lions Club also provides eye exams and eye surgeries through the Lions Eye Foundation located in San Francisco. Surgeries can include such things as cataract and retinal surgery. Those who qualify may also receive transportation to and from the surgery center as well as overnight accommodations.
Growth through generosity.
Stories of Hope: Vision Screenings & Eyeglasses
On a crisp Morro Bay morning, the line begins forming before the sun has burned through the fog. Parents stand with children whose eyes squint at chalkboards. Retirees, fishermen, and service workers come too — each with their own quiet story of what it means to live without clear sight.
Here in our coastal town, where the horizon rolls endlessly into the Pacific, clear vision should never be a privilege reserved for the fortunate. Yet for many neighbors, the cost of an exam or a simple pair of glasses is out of reach. That’s where the Morro Bay Lions step in.
In collaboration with various California Lion foundations, our club organizes periodic vision screenings at elementary schools, community centers, and local events. Licensed Lions and trained volunteers work with precision and care, screening both children and adults. We focus on those facing financial barriers — but the truth is, anyone is welcome. No paperwork. No appointment. Just neighbors helping neighbors.
And in that moment when a child puts on their very first pair of glasses — perhaps recycled from another generous donor — the world shifts. Letters on a page stop swimming. A teacher’s face sharpens. The board becomes legible. Futures open.
We provide recycled eyeglasses on-site whenever possible and connect patients with follow-up care if more specialized help is needed. Every pair matters. Every exam matters. Every clear view of the world changes a life.
How you can help.
The need is constant. Glasses break. Children grow. Eyes change. But our capacity to respond grows with your generosity.
Donate your used glasses.
Those frames tucked in a drawer, those lenses sitting unused — they can become someone’s second chance at clarity. Through our recycling efforts, a pair of glasses given in kindness in one home becomes a tool for education, work, and dignity in another.
Our local Morro Bay Lions Club along with other Lions Clubs collect and refurbish eyeglasses and send thousands of refurbished glasses each year to needy individuals in both Central America and Mexico.
In Morro Bay, we believe everyone deserves the simple dignity of sight. With your help, we can keep bringing the gift of vision to classrooms, kitchens, and communities across the coast.
